Faith Over Fear

never be afraid on typewriter

I think I read somewhere that it’s written in the Bible not to fear 366 times. I’ve never fact checked this myself, so don’t shoot the messenger! Ha!

Something hit me recently though. When I worry and fear, I put my faith in everything other than God since He directly instructs us to NOT FEAR or be afraid.

Fear is actually idolatry. I’m not talking about the fear that is hardwired in our brains to help us scan from danger and keep us from dangerous situations, but the nagging fear that God won’t take care of us or come through. If we are fearing, we aren’t trusting God.

When we don’t trust God, we are putting our faith in something other than God. When we put our faith in things other than God, that “thing” becomes an idol.

I read this excerpt in a book that I read recently by Kathy Gallagher that went something like this (a few words edited). “So you can see why fearful living is sinful living. It is the opposite of trusting the Lord. How is it possible to obey the commandment to, ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him…'(Proverbs 3:5-6) when you are consumed with a certain outcome or behavior? You cannot live your life trying to control and trust the Lord at the same time; it’s not possible.”
